Born in Cambridge in 1957 Claire Brown studied graphic design and printmaking at Cambridge School of Art but rejected the commercial world to earn her living as an artist.Although her early work was of architectural images she rapidly developed a passion for landscape painting and quickly realised that etching was the medium that attracted her most to express the warmth and feeling of her work. She spent some years at an Atelier in London perfecting her skills as printmaker and during this time experimented with effects and textures to reinterpret her watercolours. Having chosen an image Brown makes annotated drawings on the spot completing the water colour in her studio and this forms the basis of her print determining the coloursshe will use; she then meticulously and sensitively prepares the copper plate reconstructing the effects of bright sun or soft haze highlighting branches or casting shadows across fields. Early after leaving college she was commissioned to paint Gonville and Kings Colleges in Cambridge and held numerous one man shows quickly establishing a name for her rich and sensitive style.
