» Artists » Michael Forbes

Michael was born in 1968 and brought up in the Scottish Highlands Where he still lives today. “It is part of the world that fires my desire to paint”. It’s also where surrealism was born. Some may argue it had something to do with certain artists in the 20s in France but stories of fairies and half man half horse Kelpies and other bizarre images of the human mind were told in the Scottish Highlands long before that. His work is sometimes surreal and often absurd but usually with a twist of humour to it. He is entirely self taught and given his isolation he has little contact with the main stream art world.

“I don’t care for the whole art scene as such. I would far rather be away painting my pictures for myself and if anyone else should like them then that’s for the better”.

His work has found favour with Hollywood file Director Terry Gilliam and the British Band Travis are among collectors of his work along with various corporate and public collections throughout the world. Commissions also include his popular poster for the London Underground. He was picked to exhibit in the chronological “Animals in Art” exhibition a celebration of British animal painting over 400 years. Michael was selected to represent the future of animal artists.

“He is a master of invention and pawky humour a phantasmagorist of prodigious dexterity and more uncommonly an illustrator of some delicacy and discipline”
