Born in Saitama Japan in 1949 Noboru Koura graduated from Tama University of Art in 1975. Since 1973 he has exhibited widely in Japan in various group shows and one-man shows such as J-One and Galerie 412 in Tokyo. He now lives and works in Saitama Prefecture. The beautiful woodblock prints from 17th and 18th century Japan often contained an element of the mysterious within a formalised structure. A hint of drama of unspoken emotions is revealed by close study of the delicate compositions. This is also true in its way of the younger contemporary printmakers - typically in the etchings of Koura and the mezzotints of Yokoi. A closer look at Koura's "Pier" reveals a scene of dramatic foreboding. The car is abandoned by steps leading down to the water three tiny bullet holes are visible in the windscreen. The motor-cyclists in "Tightrope" are dressed as for battle but where and how is not revealed.
